Operators and musician Albert Peterson ends up stuck in an unfortunate situation when hip-pushing shake and move whiz Conrad Birdie is drafted into the Army. Albert's secretary and sweetheart, Rose "Rosie" Alvarez, concocts a last-dump attention trick to have Conrad Birdie record and perform a melody before he is sent abroad. She makes Albert guarantee to surrender the music business and to begin showing English at schools ("An English Teacher"). They plan to have Birdie sing Albert's new tune "One final Kiss" and give one fortunate young lady from his fan club a genuine "keep going kiss" on The Ed Sullivan Show before going into the Army. The fortunate young lady picked haphazardly from Conrad's fan club is fifteen-year-old Kim MacAfee from Sweet Apple, Ohio. Every one of the youngsters in Sweet Apple are making up for lost time with the most recent tattle about Kim MacAfee and Hugo Peabody going consistent ("The Telephone Hour"). Kim, eager to have a beau, ponders how upbeat she is with her development ("How Lovely to Be a Woman"). She stops the Conrad Birdie fan club via telephone in light of the new point of reference incident in her life, and as she tells the news, her closest companion Ursula is stunned. In the interim, Conrad, Albert and Rose set off to Sweet Apple to get ready for the occasion. Before they leave via train from New York City, nearby adolescent young ladies are delighted to meet Conrad, albeit one young lady is miserable in light of the fact that she believes that when Conrad escapes the armed force, she'll be excessively old for him. Albert encourages her to be idealistic ("Put on a Happy Face"). Before long, journalists touch base with inquiries for Conrad, however Rosie, Albert, and the young ladies answer for him, pushing without end tabloids ("Normal, American Boy").[4] Conrad gets a legend's welcome in Sweet Apple, and Hugo stresses that Kim likes Conrad more than she prefers him, yet Kim guarantees Hugo that he's the one and only she adores ("One Boy"). Conrad stuns the town's guardians and makes the young ladies insane with his execution of "Genuinely Sincere", which makes the young ladies all weak (and even the chairman's wife!). Conrad turns into a visitor in the MacAfee house and disturbs Kim's dad, Harry MacAfee, by being an inconsiderate and egotistical visitor. Mr. MacAfee does not need Kim to kiss Conrad until Albert lets him know their entire family will be on The Ed Sullivan Show. Mr. also, Mrs. MacAfee, Kim, and her more youthful sibling Randolph sing Sullivan's gestures of recognition ("Hymn For a Sunday Evening-Ed Sullivan"[5]). Hugo sees that Kim is pulled in to Conrad and turns out to be exceptionally desirous. Albert's domineering, meddling mother, Mae Peterson, comes to separate her child's association with Rosie. She acquaints Albert with Gloria Rasputin, a breathtaking blonde she met on the transport who could supplant Rosie as his secretary. Gloria trusts that on the off chance that she helps Albert with papers, he can get Gloria into the stage, as she is a tap artist. Mae sings "Swanee River" as Gloria tap moves (generally portrayed as her making a blockhead of herself) and closures doing a split. Shockingly, she needs a little help getting up from her position. Albert gives her a vocation to sort up a few incomes and Rosie is angry yet conceals it from Albert. Rosie, envious and irate, longs for vicious approaches to murder Albert ("One Hundred Ways Ballet"). Rosie and Hugo plot to destroy the show. Conrad sings on The Ed Sullivan Show ("One Last Kiss") and as he inclines into kiss Kim, Hugo runs in front of an audience and punches him in the face. On live TV, Conrad swoons, Rosie parts ways with Albert, and Albert, attempting to cover for the disasters of the night, drives a melody of "Ordinary American Boy".
